· Drink lots of water, keep larynx wet. Make sure it is pure water.
· Eat lots of fruits and veggies. They are not only healthy for you, but they are natural cleaners.
· Exercise such as walking, swimming, or jogging. Swimming helps to improve your breathing.
· Avoid excessive amounts of sugar; and avoid it totally on the day of performing.
· Avoid dairy products 3-days to 1 week prior to a performance.
· In fact, avoid the following:
soft drinks, over-the-counter decongestants, diuretics, dairy, alcohol, smoke, stimulants, and caffeine.
· Vocalize for 30 minutes 5 days a week.
· Do breathing exercises as often as you can.
· Always warm the voice up and down before and after a performance.
· The shorter your performance, the longer the warm up.
· After a performance, gargle with warm salty (sea salt) water.
· If you drank too much alcohol the night before, take a Vitamin B1 before going to bed that night.
COLD
At the first sign of a cold, try Zicam and Airborne, both available at drug stores. Zicam is zinc based, and Airborne is herbal.
Most everyone has heard of Echinacea, the natural immune booster. Take it as directed for 6 days to help you get over a cold.
Goldenseal is a natural antibiotic that is can also help you feel better faster, and especially if taken in conjunction with Echinacea.
Do not take Echinacea or Goldenseal for more than 6 days at a time. And be sure to take the recommended megadoses of Vitamin C!
Eat raw garlic mixed in smoothies.
Mix hot water, juice of one lemon, 1 tbs. honey, and 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper together. Sip throughout the day.
Eucalyptus is great for helping to clear the lungs, fight bronchitis, and relieve congestion.
Some herbal tea blends recommended are Throat Coat, Cold Season, and Breathe Deep by Yogi Teas.
If you need to speak or sing and have a cold, the best and fastest remedy is homeopathic Calcara Sulphate 30c. Take 5 pills once or twice before your performance, and your throat will be relaxed and moist. It also helps fight weakness and improves a cold.
FLU
Oscillococcinum by Boiron is a homeopathic remedy that has been proven to help you get over influenza. The medication consists of little sweet spheres that are packaged in small screw-top cylinders. Empty the cylinder of medicine into your hand and place under your tongue to let it dissolve. One cylinder every 6 hours for 2-3 days.
HOARSENESS/LARYNGITIS (DO NOT SING WITH THESE CONDITIIONS!)

Honey Remedy
1 part licorice powder
1 part calamus powder
1 part honey
Mix well.
Take 1-4 tsp 3 -4x per day.
Tea Remedy
4 parts sage
4 parts ginger
1/2 part cinnamon
1/2 part cardamom
1/2 part licorice
Pinch of cayenne pepper
1 quart distilled water
Mix herbs together.
Simmer 2 oz. of the above mixture in the quart of water for 20 minutes.
You can add a little soy milk if you desire.
If you add the soy milk, heat again for 10 minutes.
Strain.
Flavor with honey and drink 2-3 cups per day as needed.
And don't forget the tried and true remedy of gargling with 1 tsp sea salt to a glass of warm water.
